Let’s Celebrate International Women’s Day!

As Spring of 2019 approaches, it feels more important than ever to celebrate the power of women. So, mark your calendars: Friday, March 8th is International Women’s Day all over the world! This year, celebrants are encouraged to reflect on a theme of #BalanceforBetter. That means we’ll strive for balance in the workplace, balance at home, balance in education and balance in pop culture. After all, balance is a beautiful thing!

Of course, we’ve come a long way over the years, and there are many people and moments to honor. For over a hundred years, March 8th has been a day designated for women. Its purpose differs from country to country, city to city and place to place. In most countries, it’s a way to celebrate women’s accomplishments and gender equality, launch new initiatives and raise awareness. The day is supported and celebrated globally by governments, industries, educational institutions, community groups, charities and nonprofits, as well as the media. Together, every person and all demographics can make a difference within their group by taking concrete action to help build a more gender-balanced world. Gender balance will take teamwork, but I know our communities are up for the challenge.

When I began researching this topic, I stumbled upon some historical trivia and tidbits that I thought you’d enjoy, too.

  1. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY BEGAN MORE THAN 100 YEARS AGO. Hard to believe, but when the first International Women’s Day was held, more than 1 million people in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Denmark took part.
  2. THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICIALLY ADOPTED INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY IN 1975. Since March 8, 1975, the UN has been the primary sponsor the of the annual event. They have encouraged other countries to embrace the holiday and its goal of celebrating “acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.”
  3. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY IS AN OFFICIAL HOLIDAY IN DOZENS OF COUNTRIES. March 8th is a celebration around the world and an official holiday in dozens of countries. Afghanistan, Armenia, Cambodia, Cuba, Russia, Ukraine and Vietnam are just some of the places where International Women’s Day is recognized as an official holiday.
  4. EACH YEAR’S FESTIVITIES HAVE AN OFFICIAL THEME. Remember how this year’s theme is #BalanceforBetter? The theme for 2017 was #BeBoldforChange and the 2016 theme was #PledgeforParity. Talk about hashtags that celebrate HER!

So, how to celebrate in style? A t-shirt says a thousand words. The slogan tee has been back on top ever since Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri sent a t-shirt down the runway which read, “We should all be feminists.” To ensure you look the part in the international celebration of women this year, here are some slogan tees that are perfect to pair with your most comfortable, confidence-driving denim.

In a perfect Lemonade To Lace world, my goal with each blog post is to give you one new thing to think about and add to your repertoire of tidbits that you already know. If you learn something from reading each of my posts, then I know I’ve done my job. This blogging experience and the sharing of information helps me learn along the way, too! This time around, I didn’t have much knowledge about International Women’s Day until my friend Jenna brought it to my attention. What I’ve learned has reinforced what I did know: I know that everyone has a part to play in the future of our world, everywhere and all the time. I also know that balance drives a better working world. Ask any leader or business executive. Let’s all build a gender-balanced world together and help create a #BalanceforBetter. Girlfriends, let’s do this!

A Healthy New You For The New Year

As January kickstarts 2019, many of us are looking towards our new year’s resolutions. It’s always empowering to begin the year with positive vibes and a fresh perspective. One of the most common resolutions every year is getting fit, healthy and into shape. I think that’s wonderful! What could be better than trying to achieve a healthy lifestyle and putting HEALTHY at the top of your ‘to do’ list for 2019?

In this day and age, there are many workout classes and fitness trends to explore. Low impact exercise and a focus on recovery are sure to play critical roles in 2019’s top workout trends.

Of course, let’s be honest: Fitting in time to exercise can be tricky for many of us! Ultimately, it’s important to get into a routine. Prioritize and be realistic with your goals. Life gets busy, so come up with a workout plan that works for you and your individual lifestyle. Be realistic with your goals. Don’t go overboard and commit to something that you won’t stick to. Well, there is one thing you should commit to when exercising…FUN! Gone are the days when getting fit meant you had to stare at a wall while jogging solo on a treadmill. Get outside! Take a walk with friends or sign up for a different kind of workout class that you’ve never done before. There’s a workout class to suit everyone’s taste and style. That’s where this year’s Lemonade to Lace lineup comes in: From prior dancers to competitive hearts, there’s a class for every fitness fanatic to-be.

With the growing popularity of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube, it’s no surprise that streaming services are also taking over the fitness industry. Doing a barre workout or yoga class in your very own home via YouTube or other fitness apps is very appealing. After all, it comes right to you with just the tap of a finger, and there’s no rush to sign-up or worry about overcrowded classes! If you love prioritizing convenience over cost, there are two home-based immersive fitness products that you need to know about right now. Neither are cheap, but they are a good alternative to joining a high priced gym or workout facility. You will have a multisensory workout experience tapping into your sense of sight and sound in your own home. And, if you do the math, they eventually pay for themselves since you’ll be able to axe existing class programs. This is immersive fitness at its best!

Meet the world’s first nearly invisible home gym. This full-length mirror  transforms into a sleek, interactive display, allowing you to participate in 50+ cardio, strength, yoga and boxing classes from their studio in New York. Complete with an embedded camera and speakers, it truly creates an immersive, in-person group environment right in your living room!

These at-home, high-tech spinning bikes are equipped with 22-inch HD screens that let you tune-in and experience the adrenaline and action of 14 daily LIVE and 8000+ ON DEMAND classes straight from your home.

Dread group classes and the stress of early sign-up? No worries! You can download these apps from the App store and workout on your own time in your own space and at your own pace.

Note: I’m touching on details of these companies that I deem important for customers. However, every class is different and has its own personality, depending on the city, studio location and the specific instructor. Music can vary and the atmosphere can vary. Ultimately, it’s about trial and error and discovering what is best for you and your health. Pricing and promotions can be different depending on location or city.

As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing better than a really good stretch after an invigorating workout. Incorporating recovery training into your schedule is just as important as your actual workout; we’re hearing more about how this assisted stretching helps to build your flexibility and range of motion while providing relaxation. It is the best way to get a deep stretch safely and effectively. I’ve noticed more and more stretching studios opening up. Stretch Lab is just down the street from me. I’ve been there several times for a post-workout stretch and I love it!  I actually gave each of our kids a Stretch Lab gift card as one of their holiday gifts. It feels that good!

One-On-One assisted full body stretching that focuses on all muscle groups.

Prices: Introductory Special for new clients only: 25 minute stretch $29 (only good Mon. – Fri.)

25 minute stretch $39

50 minute stretch $75

Assisted full body stretch

Prices: 25 minute stretch $45

55 minute stretch $100

Other forms of recovery training that I’ve been hearing more about are cryotherapy, infrared saunas, float tanks and lymphatic drainage. These places are popping up in and around Los Angeles, so I’m sure they’re in your city, too.

As I’m reflecting on what I’d like to accomplish this new year, I believe workout classes, fitness trends and recovery methods are simply add-ons to an overall wonderful lifestyle. If you take it all away, however, it all comes down to you. It comes down to you making the decision to live your best life, commit to a routine, discovering your rhythm, and taking that first step into a new chapter for 2019. Whether you’re 20 years old or 60, we’re all in this together, trying to be the best version of ourselves. Hopefully, this post helps you on your journey to feeling comfortable and confident. After all, it’s all about achieving: a healthy new you for the new year!

Fall is here, and you can feel it all the way from your fingers to your toes. Speaking of fingers, this may mean it’s time to switch up your salon choices – just another fun reminder of the sweater weather ahead. Whether you’re sticking to tried and true neutrals or interested in a moodier statement polish, consider this your guide to holiday season manicures.

To be honest, I’m that girl who picks the same polish, week after week and year after year. I have a ‘thing’ with my nails and just feel better when they’re always put together. It’s been a comfort to me ever since college. I’m consistent with my choices almost every time I get a manicure and pedicure. It might sound boring, but for me, it’s nice to know I can count on this little detail of my life remaining constant! I will say, even though I love neutral shades, I think it’s fabulous that there’s such a wide variety of colors offered at my nail salon. Like I always say, a girl’s gotta have choices!

In case you’re in search of the perfect neutral, my favorite ‘go to’ colors are Marshmallow and Ballet Slippers by Essie. I absolutely love these shades. I can thank Carrie Bradshaw and “Sex And The City” for that, because they were Carrie’s favorite colors, too. These are truly the ultimate neutrals – they go with everything, all year long. It’s great to know that if an unexpected meeting or event comes up, my nails are sure to be set. I also love the OPI gel polish called ‘Mod About You’ (pastel) for my gel manicures. If I dare switch to a deep fall color, my favorite shade is OPI’s Malaga Wine. It’s a beautiful deep red, and works well with every skin tone.

There are so many different brands out there to choose from that it becomes mind-boggling. My nail salon, like many, only carries OPI and Essie polishes. After checking out the wide variety of colors, here are my nail polish picks for fall.

OPI Malaga Wine Malaga Wine

OPI Somewhere Over The Rainbow Mountains Somewhere Over The Rainbow Mountains

OPI You Don’t Know Jacques! You Don’t Know Jacques!

Essie Chinchilly Chinchilly

OPI Reykjavik Has All The Hot Spots Reykjavik Has All The Hot Spots

There are some beautiful shades in here that remind me how much I love fall fashion – bring on the cooler weather, LA!

Obsessed With White Sneakers

From high fashion to high street, the white sneaker is popping up everywhere. When it comes to versatility, white sneakers are the “be all, end all” and those who are in-the-know have completely embraced the style, comfort and practicality of this fashion trend. They’ve won me over, too: White sneakers have become one of my all-time favorite wardrobe staples. They have had such a style comeback over the past year, and it’s now acceptable to wear them pretty much everywhere and with every type of clothing. From maxi dresses to mini dresses and from skirts to culottes, they literally work with everything.

As a matter of fact, I was talking tennis shoe lingo with a darling sales associate who was helping me at a boutique in Santa Monica. She’s getting married this summer and was telling me all about her Carolina Herrera wedding dress. She even showed me a photo of her at her dress fitting. Guess what kind of shoes she bought to wear under her gown to dance in? A pair of white rhinestone Golden Goose sneakers! OMG! She won me over with that comment. The right white pair of sneakers can truly be the perfect fit for any occasion, and even a breath of fresh air.

This season we have many stylish options, from minimalist styles to playful embellishment. I’ve seen everything from metallic details, pearls, embroidery and appliques adorning white sneakers. I’ve also seen many pairs of solid white sneakers with just a simple, subtle logo. There are plenty of price points and styles available right now, from budget-friendly to those that break-the-bank. One thing I know for sure is that if you haven’t purchased an “on trend” pair of white sneaks yet, you should take the plunge. I can guarantee you’ll be glad you did!

Back To The Basics

Let’s get one thing straight: There’s nothing wrong with being basic! I’m the first to admit that I love statement pieces and trendy items, but in reality, I know that simple basics are the building blocks of any stylish, versatile wardrobe. By simple basics, I mean the perfect jeans and crisp white tee that make every wardrobe complete. Other basics in my closet include neutral camisoles, black slacks, sweaters and black leggings. They are the easy, wearable pieces in my closet that I know will be in style forever.

These pieces tend to be my first go-to items when trying to put an ensemble together – they look sleek on their own, but you’ll thank yourself for stocking up when you go to style Miu Miu’s latest ballet flats or a bold statement coat. These basics make wearing statement pieces a breeze!

Over the years, I’ve noticed that the basic pieces I wear most are those that are transitional and easy to pack for travel. Layering pieces are essential, so I like to keep certain colors and fabrics in mind when shopping for my basics. It’s common to have days here in LA where the temperature fluctuates 20 degrees, so I rarely leave home without a sweater, a wrap or a jacket.

Keep reading to explore some tried-and-true basics that are my wardrobe staples, along with a list of stores where you’ll be able to score these ‘must have’ pieces for your own capsule wardrobe.

The trend du juor in the denim world is, well, not exactly a trend – look for perfect jeans that fit well, are cut cleanly and most of all, flatter your body type. You will LIVE in them. Skinny jeans are still in the forefront and among the most popular because of their flattering fit. Slim, polished and classic, a dark wash denim is perfect for day or night. They are practical and versatile and will be your go-to style for every season. With the addition of raw hems, frayed hems and step cut hems, denim fatigue is currently a non-issue. Big yay! For the past ‘I don’t know how many years’, it’s been the same ol’ same ol’ in the denim world. Every pair looked exactly the same and there was no reason to buy anything new. That was until now, and I have found it fun getting to purchase these interesting new styles and add them to my denim collection. I rarely get rid of jeans, because unique styles tend to come back around!

The great thing about a white tee is that it won’t go in-and-out-of-style in the blink of an eye. It’s about as basic as you can get when it comes to clothing. It is that one item that you can mix and match, layer and travel with and enjoy wearing season after season. The key here is whether to splurge or spend. I’ve had bad luck over the years with a few well-known brands who have brick and mortar stores in my neighborhood and in shopping malls across America. Their tees come in all different styles (crew neck, v-neck and scoop neck) but friends, the quality is just not there and they’re not exactly cheap. Several years ago while visiting New York City, I ventured into a Uniqlo store on 5th Ave. It’s a flagship store and happened to be packed with people and loaded with merchandise. Everything they offer is basic, but well made. There is nothing at all exciting about their merchandise other than the quality, easy laundering and good prices. But it turns out, that’s actually pretty exciting! I have so many white tees from them (and black tees too). If you need to update the white tees in your wardrobe, then Uniqlo items are a win-win deal.

*By the way, I love their ribbed cotton camisoles with lace straps. I’m always layering these basics with jackets or sweaters. In addition, I think their airism hoodies are the best and so easy to pack for travel.

The other brand that I’ve seen splashed across the internet is Everlane. I’ve never tried their white tees, but they’ve gotten rave reviews on their high quality, affordable and sustainable pieces. This company prides itself on simple, basic pieces. Their items are classic, not trendy, and can only be ordered online. Plus, they’re worn and loved by Meghan Markle – what more testimony does one need?

Petit-bateau is another t-shirt brand that uses high quality cotton, launders well and can be ordered online if you can’t find it in department stores.

As I mentioned above, Uniqlo is one of the best spots to find any key basics at below market prices. They’re just the best at what they do! They are currently sold out of my favorite lace trimmed cotton ribbed camisole and I hate to even tell you how cheap I got it for. I bought multiples and have so many of them that I wear them all the time. I found the exact same one online at Nordstrombut it’s just not as good of a deal. This style looks great paired with any jacket and can be worn layered all year long. I happen to love the lace detail that adds just a little bit of oomph to what would ordinarily be just another basic piece. Another great cami / tank to take a look at is this one by J.Crew

I think it’s a great look at a reasonable price, and the neutral colors are easy to wear with just about anything.

Every woman and every closet needs at least one pair of black pants. They are timeless, and a high quality pair can last for years. I prefer to shop at Theory  when I’m in the market for a new pair. I know I can go into their store and come out with what I need. Their quality is good. Their price point is within reach and they have a great selection of different styles to choose from including skinny, flair, cropped and relaxed fits. Their different fits will take you from work to weekend and from day to night, which make this brand the perfect one-stop-shop for professionals of any sort.

For me, sweaters are the trickiest and most challenging item in my wardrobe. Why, you might ask? I’m allergic to wool, which poses a huge problem when shopping for sweaters. Most sweaters are made out of merino wool or cashmere and both of them irritate my skin. Yes, even cashmere gives me an itch! So, If I need to buy a sweater as a layering piece, I have to resort to cotton, which is generally more difficult to find. I’ve had the best luck buying cotton sweaters at both Uniqlo and Zara.

The price point at both stores is incredibly reasonable and the quality is good. A solid color sweater will never be an exciting purchase, but I was able to find a Zara pullover that has a cute side slit so you can achieve a high-low effect. This detailing makes such a basic piece a bit more interesting. It’s lightweight, comes in many basic colors and is perfect for our weather here in LA. I actually just packed this sweater in two different colors for my trip to Houston last week. One was black (of course it was!) and the other was an oatmeal color. The great thing about this particular sweater is that because of the fabric, it hardly takes up any room in a suitcase.

Black leggings are a wardrobe staple for me – you can find me in a pair several days a week. In fact, I think they’re a staple for all Angelenos! I not only wear them when I’m working out, but also when I’m running around doing errands or at home working at my computer. With our casual culture and athleisure so popular among women of all ages, the basic black legging is now considered one of those necessary items for any wardrobe. Lululemon still has the most basic, high quality and no longer see-through black leggings. I am always guaranteed that their “wunder under” style will give me the support and hold me in where I need it to. Lululemon leggings are not cheap, but they are durable, launder well and last. In addition, they are flattering to the figure and in my opinion, worth the investment. There are many other brands out there with fun black legging styles like Alo, Sweaty Betty, Rese and Ultracor, but when it comes to a basic black legging with no design, stick with Lululemon.

Other brands you should check out when you need to add to or update the basics in your wardrobe are Aritzia (now in Westfield Century City Mall in LA), Topshop, Vince and IRO.

A funny quote I saw the other day goes like this: “I could give up shopping, but I’m not a quitter.”

So when the going gets tough, just remember, the tough go shopping!

Valentine’s Gifts for Couples of Every Age

Valentine’s Day is all about LOVE, which is why I think this holiday is so incredibly special. In a previous post, I shared on my blog that I collect heart shaped rocks – so  it should be no surprise that a holiday with a heart theme would be one of my favorites.

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, gift giving season is still in session. LOVE is in the air and It’s time to start brainstorming what you should do, what you should give and how you’re going to celebrate with that special someone.

Whether you’re trying to show your special guy or gal how much you love them, or if you’re single and just want to spoil yourself, I’ve rounded up some gift ideas for you to check out in all different price ranges for everyone on your growing LOVE list in 2018.

Coats Galore: From Dusters to Heavy-Duty

While most people get excited for sweater weather, I actually look forward to good old-fashioned coat weather. Here’s the reason why. For most of my life, I’ve lived in temperate climates where it rarely (if ever) gets to freezing temperatures. The temperature here in Santa Monica today is 65 degrees. When the evenings dip to 50, I love having the opportunity to wear one of my coats since we don’t have many days like this. Yes. This is our winter in Southern California. I know it’s hard to believe that it’s even possible to have mild winter weather like this in January at the same time our friends up north are experiencing temperatures in the 20’s. Even Texas has 20 – 30 degree temps this week.  All I have to say to weather that cold is “Yikes” and “Brr!”

So yes, while we definitely need jackets right now, we Californians aren’t really in the market for heavy duty fabrics…which brings me to the duster coat.

The duster coat is the perfect kind of jacket on a slightly chilly night. It is a guaranteed way to add another chic layer to any outfit and takes any look from basic to sophisticated. It is quite versatile and can be worn from day to night. You can throw it on to keep warm but still stay cool, all at the same time. It’s effortlessly glamorous and makes for an extremely stylish look – even when worn over black jeans and a white t-shirt or henley.

When I am in New York during the winter months, I love checking out street style winter fashion. There’s always such a variety of fabulous coats to look at while walking the streets. It’s a great time of year to “people watch”. My friends who live in cold weather climates truly believe that all you really see of an outfit in the winter is your coat (especially if you’re outside), so why not have a fashionable coat, or two or three? It totally makes sense, because when it’s summer here in LA, we wouldn’t wear the same top every day; why would people who live up north continually wear the same coat? Here are a few of my favorite duster coats and heavy duty coats to get you through the winter months while looking fashionable – no matter where you live.

Winter is the time of year for comfort, for good food and warmth, for a touch of a friendly hand, for a talk beside the fire and for a mug of hot chocolate. It is the time for home…and a new coat.

By the way, the flower coat at the top, the model, and the photograph are courtesy of my dear friend Kathy Trank.
